Big grocery stores are built to serve a lot of people at once. That can be convenient—but if you’re shopping with celiac disease, food sensitivities, a specific wellness goal, or simply trying to make better choices, “aisle 12, somewhere near the protein bars” isn’t always enough.
That’s where an independent health food store in Pittsburgh can still make a real difference.
At Eden’s Market Pittsburgh, we believe shopping for better-for-you foods and supplements should feel personal and approachable. We’re a neighborhood market in Mt. Lebanon with a curated mix of gluten-free and allergen-friendly foods, supplements, locally produced items, and personal care products—backed by someone you can actually ask when you have a question.
From a Gluten-Free Need to a Pittsburgh Specialty Store
Eden’s Market was founded in 2009 by Pittsburgh grocery-industry veteran Jeff Weiner. After a flood wiped out his traditional grocery store the previous year, he started over with a specialized focus inspired by his own celiac disease.
The new store emphasized hard-to-find gluten-free foods, health supplements, and community education. Weiner served with the Gluten Intolerance Group and worked with local doctors and restaurants to improve understanding of proper food-handling practices.
While that educational foundation still drives the store today, the ownership story features an unexpected second chapter.
A Ballet Connection, Nearly 30 Years Later

Our current owner's connection to Eden's Market spans three decades of unexpected turns:
-
1993 (The Host Family): Moving from Maine to join the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s year-round program as a teenager, she was placed with a host family in Mt. Lebanon: the Weiners.
-
The Intervening Years: After a knee injury ended her professional dancing career, she worked through concert promotion, earned a business degree, and spent years managing retail, wholesale, and hospitality operations in the California beverage industry.
-
The Shift: Choosing sobriety and a career path focused on health, she left the beverage industry to align her work with personal wellness.
-
2024–2025 (The Reconnection): Nearly 30 years after their last contact, Jeff reached out via LinkedIn to discuss selling the business. She officially became the owner of Eden’s Market in January 2025.
Why an Independent Health Food Store Still Matters
The wellness landscape has changed enormously since 2009. While gluten-free products and supplements are more common now, more choice doesn't automatically mean easier choices. Managing celiac disease or food sensitivities requires constant diligence regarding cross-contact and unclear labels—you shouldn't need to be a full-time investigator just to buy groceries.
Being independent allows Eden's Market to prioritize:
-
Gluten-Free & Allergen-Conscious Focus: Sourcing hard-to-find items specifically for dietary restrictions.
-
Strict Quality Standards: Hand-selecting supplements based on formulation, quality, and transparency.
-
Local Sourcing: Bringing in regional meat, eggs, and artisanal products because they are worth supporting.
-
Personalized Support & Education: Offering personal service to help shoppers make informed choices.
A Community Wellness Store Is Actually a Community
Eden’s Market relies on a broader network of support. Local specialists offer insights on skincare, dental care, and supplements, while community members actively help with day-to-day operations. Every customer request and recommendation directly shapes what goes on the shelf next.
To us, a community wellness store doesn't replace healthcare professionals. It simply means creating a place where people can ask questions, discover better options, and know that every product was thoughtfully selected.
The Next Chapter of Eden’s Market Pittsburgh

As more people connect food with overall well-being—sleep, movement, supplementation, and professional care—Eden’s Market exists to make that choices simpler.
We are expanding our allergen-friendly selections, deepening local producer partnerships, and introducing online ordering, local pickup, and shipping through our new website.
Big-box stores will always have their place. But there should also be room for independent stores that know their communities, question what they stock, and remember the person on the other side of the checkout counter.
